JULY 2010

Stepping out from Snibston Walk - Wednesday 14th July, 11am-3pm
A gentle stroll from Snibston. Learn about how this former colliery became a nature reserve. View the smallest church in Leicestershire then visit Donington Manor House for a garden tour and cream tea (included in the price). Pre-booking essential on 01530 278444 or 01530 831259. Return by Ranger vehicle. £10 per person (no concessions).

Miners' Mornings: Meet the Experts Talk - Thursday 15th July, 10.30am-12noon
A monthly mining themed talk and a chance to catch up and reminisce with old friends at Snibston. This month's talk is titled: The Califat Colliery Disaster 1863 with Denis Baker. Pre-booking required on 01530 278444 or at Snibston ticket desk. £3.50 per person to include tea, coffee and biscuits.

Avebury: Landscape of the Megaliths: Meet the Experts Talk at Snibston Discovery Centre - Wednesday 21st July, 2pm
Dr Mark Gillings (University of Leicester) talks about recent discoveries which shed new light on the World Heritage Site at Avebury. Part of the Festival of British Archaeology.Admission is free but usual prices apply to enter the museum.

Making Markets Matter – 24th July

Junior Fishing Contest - Saturday 24th July, 8am-1pm
Snibston’s annual fishing contest for under 16s. Held at the Snibston Grange Fishery in Snibston's Country park.
Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place anglers. Pre-booking essential. Please contact Snibston if you would like to take part. £8 admission per ticket.

Historic Walk around Coalville with Denis Baker of the Coalville Heritage Society - Monday 26th July, 6:30pm

Rock Art Workshop at Snibston Discovery Centre - Tuesday 27th July, 10-30am-12.30pm, 1.30-3.00pm
Join the Rangers and local wildlife artist Rowena Holmes to create your own painted riverbed friend. Using stone and acrylic paints you will learn the techniques required. Booking essential. Please Contact Snibston to book your place. £5 per person

The Archaeology of Coalmining: Talk by Fred Hartley at Snibston Discovery Centre - Monday 26th July, 7:30pm
Join Fred Hartley of Leicestershire County Council Museums for a fascinating talk about how some of the earliest coal mines ever examined by archaeologists were found in North West Leicestershire. Part of the Festival of British Archaeology. Pre-booking required on 01530 278444 or at Snibston ticket desk. Admission is free but usual prices apply to enter the museum.

Space Hop Summer Reading Challenge - Over the summer school holidays
Coalville Library is inviting children aged between 4 and 12 years old to follow the crew of starship Ex Libris as they try to set up the first libary on the moon! Space Hop is themed around the final frontier and blasted-off from Leicestershire libraries on 10th July. It's a free and fun way for kids to get into reading. Coalville By The Sea - 13th August 

Pond Dipping and Mini Beast Hunting at the Grange Nature Reserve - Saturday 14th August, 10-30am-12pm, 1-2.30pm
Come on a mini beast safari down the Grange Nature Reserve with the Rangers. Search for pond life and the creepy crawlies in the woods. Nets and equipment supplied. Pre-booking essential. Please Contact Snibston to book your place. £4 per child.

Pairs Fishing Contest - Sunday 15th August, 8.00am Draw. 9am-2pm
Snibston Grange’s annual pairs match, fished over two lakes. Overall prizes for heaviest combined weights. Pre-booking essential. Please contact the Snibston rangers on 07939 589622 to book your place. £30 per pair.

This month's talk is titled: From Pit Lad to Manager’s Office and Beyond with Lewis Elverston. Local man Lewis Elverston talks about his experiences working in the coal industry. Pre-booking required on 01530 278444 or at Snibston ticket desk. £3.50 per person to include tea, coffee and biscuits.

Miners Gala Day - Saturday 11th September 10:30am
Due to popular demand, Snibston Discovery Centre will be hosting its third annual Miners' Gala in 2010. Come along to celebrate Coalville's mining heritage with us. There's lots for the whole family to enjoy including brass bands, colliery tours, train rides, ferret racing and much more. Gala parade starts from Snibston at 10.30am - please contact us if you would like to take part. For more information, call Snibston on 01530 278444 or email Snibston@leics.gov.uk. Admission to the Gala is free but usual museum entry applies.

This month's talk is titled: The History of Whitwick CollieryJeffrey Knight takes a look at the history of the first colliery founded by local engineer William Stenson. Christmas Light Switch On - 27th November

Putting on the Style at Snibston's Century Theatre - Saturday 27th November, 7:30pm
Follow up your afternoon at the Christmas Lights event with an exciting and vibrant show celebrating the music of Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran, Johnny Cash, Joe Brown and Tommy Steele. This four piece band also performs a special tribute to British rock legend Lonnie Donegan. Skiffle grew out of a combination of American blues, folk and country and western and this band includes a bit of each. The night includes a bar with light refreshments, teas and coffees. Tickets are available now from the Box Office. Doors open 45 minutes before the start of the show. See Century Theatre for more details.

A monthly mining themed talk: Behind the scenes at Snibston Colliery Railway by Nick Pell, Curator of Mining and Transport, Leicestershire County Council.

Coalville Festival Weekend (Incorporating Brassfest, Picnic In The Park and Battle of the Bands) - Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th June 
Listen to the sounds of brass while you shop, enjoy live music in the Park from local bands, follow the community procession from the Clock Tower, and see arts workshops, children and youth zones, stalls and refreshments in Coalville Park.

Transport Festival – Friday 14th to Sunday 16th May 2010
Snibston Discovery Museum held its annual Transport Festival, starring a steam locomotive built in 1940 called Linda. The Festival included a flyover by a Battle of Britain Lancaster Bomber, vintage vehicles, trade stands, music from organ grinders, artists and, for kids, a Thomas the Tank Engine bouncy castle, horseshoe painting and pony rides.

Coalville Film Weekend - Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd May 
The first Coalville Film Weekend was hosted at the Century Theatre, Snibston Discovery Museum. It included blockbusting award winners, locally made shorts and animation workshops. Films featured included A Single Man starring Colin Firth, Fantastic Mr Fox, and the Ealing classic comedy The Titfield Thunderbolt. St George's Day - 24th April 2010
St George re-enacted his infamous dragon slaying display in the Belvoir Centre, and Coalville was festooned with flags and banners to celebrate St George's Day.
